Dropdown style notifications in AdminLTE themes?

I'm experimenting with AdminLTE''s notification system to display notifications via an icon on the navbar which is always accessible on mobile/desktop. I would like to know if this is a welcome change or can be better?

So, let's take a first interim conclusion...

I've already got used to the notification icon. It works as you would expect... and, as I said, the notifications disappear from the sidebar, which saves space and is less distracting.
